There are two categories of concentrates, solvent-based and solventless. A solvent-based concentrate involves using a solvent to extract cannabinoids and terpenes from plant matter. They include such options as butane, propane, and carbon dioxide (CO2). Each concentrate goes through a process to evaporate as much of the solvent as possible from the final product. For those that use butane and propane, this process is critical. Lingering chemicals can contaminate the concentrate and make it unsafe for use.
Solventless extractions, on the other hand, don’t involve the use of any solvents. Most use only heat and pressure to extract cannabinoids and terpenes from a cannabis plant. Since there’s no solvent, you don’t have to worry about lingering chemicals that could contaminate the substance.
Rosin is a type of solventless concentrate. Instead of butane or CO2, the manufacturing process involves a mixture of heat and pressure to extract the resinous sap that contains the cannabinoids and terpenes. You can make rosin from various forms of cannabis, including flowers, kief, and hash. Manufacturers can then manipulate the sap into different textures, creating shatter, budder, sugar, crumble, and more. The difference, however, is that there’s no solvent required.
Like other concentrates, rosin is exceptionally potent. You can also use it in a variety of applications, including vaping, smoking, and dabbing.
One way to get near-instant results with rosin dabs is to dab them. What this means is that you apply a very small amount to the heated nail of a dab rig. The rig looks fairly similar to a bong but has the nail instead of a bowl. The heat essentially vaporizes the concentrate, and you inhale through the mouthpiece.
